Purpose statement

The Company has a strategic business plan for the years 2023 to 2025 to ensure the ongoing delivery of the exhibition and programs to meet public and private sector expectations, including commissioning and presenting new and site-specific artworks. The business plan includes strategies to strengthen the Biennale's local, regional, national and international profile as a leading contemporary art event; support Australian and international artists to develop and present innovative, high quality and experimental work; and foster international cultural exchange. The Biennale contributes to Sydney s reputation as a creative and cultural hub and act as a catalyst for ideas. The principal activity of the Company during the financial year was the preparation of the 24th Biennale of Sydney (2024), titled Ten Thousand Suns. With the artistic direction led by Cosmin Costina and Inti Guerrero, the 24th Biennale proposes celebration as both a method and a source of joy, inspired by legacies of collective resistance and coming together to thrive in the face of injustice. With an exhibition of contemporary art at its core, the event draws from multiple histories, voices and perspectives, to explore connected thematic threads, from the celebration of the resurgence of First Nations technologies and knowledges, to Queer resilience, and carnival traditions across the world. The 2024 edition will feature 96 artists and collectives from 53 countries and territories. The 24th Biennale of Sydney will invoke a spirit of abundance and generosity as powerful political tools and resist the mainstream mindsets of perpetual crisis that often lead to inaction. This edition revisits legacies of collective resistance, strength, and exuberance, embracing a more hopeful and joyful outlook, while celebrating the exhibition as a carnival of rays and radiance, aptly titled Ten Thousand Suns. The 24th Biennale of Sydney will be presented at Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artspace, Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney Opera House, UNSW Galleries and at the iconic and recently restored White Bay Power Station. The 24th edition will be open free to the public from 09 March to 10 June 2024
